Makeup by Dara | Fresno Friday

Fresno Friday

I love this city. (Fresno, and Clovis, that is.) Sure, Fresno has made it’s way into the punch line of somebody’s joke a time or two. (It’s good to laugh at yourself, right?!) But when I think of Fresno and Clovis, I think of all the great people here. I think of all the innovative businesses popping up left and right. I think of the bright minds working hard to bring amazing events to our community.

I love that our photo booth gets to be a part of so many of these awesome occasions in the area. The more events we do, the more I realize we’ve got a great thing going in our (not so) little city. There is a lot of talent here, and a lot of unique things to do all year long.

So, we’re launching a new blog series highlighting some of the amazing things and people in the area. (Fresno Friday!) I wanted to celebrate the great parts about our city, and connect with people along the way. Each week will look a little different. Some weeks I’ll talk with another business owner in the area, other weeks I might explore somewhere I’ve never been before. It will by no means be a comprehensive look at Fresno, but more of a spotlight on some of the things that I enjoy and things I discover along the way. I hope you’ll explore along with me!

We’re kicking off this week with an amazing makeup artist, Dara Calzada with Makeup by Dara. We’ve had the pleasure of working with her on many weddings, and she always does an incredible job! And to make it even better, she is as sweet as she is talented, so every bridal party feels totally comfortable while she’s in the room. be sure to check out her website (http://makeupbydara.com) to see what she’s all about. She was gracious enough to be the first vendor to join me for Fresno Friday. We grabbed lunch this week at one of Fresno’s finest: Casa Corona. After lunch we sat outside and I asked her a few questions about herself and her business. We giggled for a little while about how your voice never sounds the same on video, and contemplated which direction to film our chat. (For the record, I went against all of my photographer instincts and filmed vertically because that’s more Intagram friendly and we live in an Instagram world. Ah! What have I done?!) 🙂 I also put her Fresno knowledge to the test! See if you can answer the Fresno trivia around the 9:35 minute mark.

We had a blast talking together, and I feel like I know her better now than before! (Goal achieved!) I hope you enjoy the video, too! If you are watching the video on a mobile device, I recommend watching it in full screen by clicking the full screen button in the top left corner!

Some highlights from the video! (And the time they occur.)

Milk & Honey | Fresno Friday
Last weekend, our booth was part of something new and exciting! We joined up with a team of local vendors for a hands-on bridal experience called Milk & Honey. It actually took place just outside of Fresno, in Tulare, but many of the vendors were local to Fresno. And since I make the rules around here, it still counts for Fresno Friday. :) The event came together like a dream. There was so much inspiration for both couples and vendors. This may have been the event’s first year, but you’d never know it by the way everything effortlessly flowed together! The coordinators behind the event, and all of the vendors involved did such an amazi ...

TradeMark Handmade Inspired | Fresno Friday
I have been admiring Nicole and Candi's work since I first saw it back in 2011. Over the years, I have been completely inspired by the incredible art they create, and I am so excited to feature them today on Fresno Friday! (Special thanks to Erica Houck for all of the photos used on the blog today! http://ericahouck.com) Let me introduce you to the talented ladies behind TradeMark Handmade Inspired! I asked them some fun questions this week, and they had some delightful answers! They also stumbled upon a new alternative to the traditional handshake greeting that I think we should all adopt asap! But we'll get to all of that at the end  ...

We had the pleasure of partnering with Made for Them for their Fight with Fashion event just last week. This annual event is an evening of fashion, dance, education, and inspiration.
